Sicilian Adventure – Part 3 Cefalu

Ok so I spoke too soon in part 2 of our Sicilian adventure about the driving not being too taxing!! It got interesting between Gardini Naxos and Cefalu! I think we went through about 50 tunnels (is that better that the Sicilians made tunnels rather than steep, hair pin bend mountain roads? – I am not sure) most were lit but some were not and going from bright sunshine to a dark tunnel is very ‘interesting’! There was also an unfortunate accident in one of the tunnels. Not my favourite experience of the trip so far!

Well earned #weestop

Arrived in Cefalu and checked into our house for the 3 nights. Good location near the gourmet supermarket and 5 mins to the beach. Dumped our stuff and off out to explore! Found a bar in a park and had a well-earned #weestop! OMG that drive!

Amazing meal at la Botte

Went for a wander and found a restaurant that our host had recommended, looked nice to booked for the evening. La Botte – it was amazing! Great food and lovely staff. Got chatting to an Irish couple who recommended climbing the ‘Rocca’. After a lovely meal and some night caps we stagger back to the house and crashed out.

Next morning popped to the supermarket for some pastry breakie then decided to challenge ourselves on the Rocca! Views were well worth it. Took some time to book tickets with the lady that works the machine (make sure you have change!!) then off we set. It starts off with steps and handrails so we were fooled into thinking it would be a doddle! After a while it is just a track and gets steeper and steeper. Views from the top were amazing then you need to negotiate the way back down. Took about 45 mins up and about 30 mins down, all for the cost of €4! Who’s idea was it to go at 12 noon on the hottest day??! Back down to solid ground and a well earner #weestop and burgers at Mum burger joint, very tasty and great chips!

Great views from Rocca

Back to the house for swim gear and a dip in the sea to cool down. Chilled for the afternoon then headed out for dinner at a place near the Cathedral. Food was nice but felt a bit conned as the owner chap insisted we have water and when we got our bill they had charged us €22 for it!! Hmmmmmmmmm bit dodgy! We also had our wine on the bill at €2 more than we were verbally told, they didn’t have a wine list just a shelf of wine!

Great find craft beer bar in Cefalu – Kalapinta

Final day in Cefalu and we booked a boat trip. It was highly recommended on Tripadvisor and didn’t disappoint. Headed over to the Marina (about 30 min walk from our house) then had a salad in the Café before meeting out skipper and the rest of the group. 3 hour boat trip with a couple of opportunities to swim off the boat. Skipper was good at pointing out the sites and then we stopped for aperitifs and nibbles. Local wine and some cheese with homemade chutney and some anchovies on toast. Very nice!

Boat tour around Cefalu with swimming – SeaLand Tours (highly recommend)

Then back to the house to clean up before dinner at the Black Cat. Table on the decking out front of the restaurant and watching the cats play in the road. Nice meal and good wine. Exhausted but a really good singer in the Duomo square so had a night cap listening to the band before back home for sleep. Packed up the car for the final time ready to head to final destination of Palermo for a couple of nights.

Dinner at The Chat Noir

Read the fourth part of my blog about our Sicilian adventure for the final part of our trip.

Lots of gorgeous cats wandering about … looking well fed too!

• Top tip: book table at la Botte, you won’t be disappointed

• Burn the calories: if you are feeling fit climb La Rocca, but not for the faint hearted!
