Sicilian Adventure – Part 4 Palermo

I thought driving through the tunnels (some not lit) and back into the blazing sunshine was bad but Palermo was scarier! As we approached the city traffic got heavy. The road then didn’t have any marked lanes so it was free-for-all! We stayed calm and found the car rental office to dispose of our vehicle and never have to drive in Sicily again … unless we return which is highly likely!

Jumped in a cab and headed to our hotel in the centre of Palermo. Lovely hotel and room with a large balcony with views of the city and surrounding mountains ( Dumped our luggage and off out to explore! Ready for our next proper Italian pizza, it had been a few days.

So out came Tripadvisor ( and again it didn’t disappoint with a lovely place, very quiet but with a proper wood fired pizza oven. Highly recommend it was called – Osteria Pizzeria Re Borbone. Spent the afternoon wandering around and found the market then a nice bar for a #weestop. Back to the hotel for a quick nap before heading out for dinner at Pablos Lounge.

Had already found this restaurant on Tripadvisor ( before we came away with 25% of food and drinks, reviews sounded fab! It didn’t disappoint, we were looked after amazingly by Iganicio. Started with amuse buche and glass of Prosecco. We then ordered some wine and a beer both arrived in their own ice buckets! Beer was fabulous but a bit strong at 8.4% and same size as a bottle of wine! Food was amazing from Octopus to Pasta Norma and veal roll. Then wandered back to hotel very full but happy.

Next day we booked a tour via Getyourguide for a street food walking tour. Glad we booked as it was full with 12 people. Host was Angelo, he was amazing. Lovely guide and very funny too!

We started in the theatre square then headed to the markets and ended up by the marina.

We tried lots of food from arancini to spleen sarnie (yep cooked in lard but surprisingly quite nice) to proper pizza to local cheese finishing with an ice cream sandwich. Learned lots, ate lots and really enjoyed it.

Back to the hotel via a couple of #weestops and some shopping and to get ready for the Saturday night life in Palermo. The city comes to life! Lots of music, street vendors and thousands of people!

We wandered down the main road and found a nice place that was recommended on Tripadvisor http://Www.tripadvisor.comand we weren’t disappointed. Had some Sicilian appetisers and some pasta and veal roll washed down with some local craft beers and some local wine.

What a great adventure this has been, tomorrow we head home and back to reality, but we have seen lots and had some amazing experience. There is still so much more to explore, and it would have been great to have a few more nights in several places to see more! Oh well, we’ll have to come back!

• Top tip: do the street food walking tour with Streaty – it won’t disappoint!
